Spirometry is a non-invasive test commonly used to assess lung function and breathing efficiency. The examination makes it possible to analyze respiratory flows and volumes, providing essential information for the diagnosis, screening, and monitoring of major respiratory diseases. To perform spirometry correctly, it is essential to use a professional spirometer calibrated with a calibration syringe, along with spirometry consumables that ensure diagnostic accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Simple spirometry and global spirometry
Simple spirometry is a first-level test that measures respiratory flows and volumes, providing parameters such as Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), and the FEV1/FVC ratio. These parameters are fundamental for respiratory screening, initial diagnosis, and monitoring of obstructive diseases. Global or complete spirometry, on the other hand, is a second-level examination that allows for a more in-depth evaluation of lung function. In addition to the parameters measured in simple spirometry, it enables the measurement of static lung volumes using specific techniques such as gas dilution or plethysmography. It is requested in complex clinical cases or when restrictive diseases are suspected. Spirometry is used not only for diagnostic purposes but also as a preventive tool for workers exposed to respiratory risks and for competitive athletes, as well as for evaluating the effectiveness of therapies over time.
Spirometry test procedure
The spirometer may be a standalone device with a built-in thermal paper printer or a model connected to a PC. In both cases, analysis is provided by dedicated software that calculates respiratory parameters. The spirometer should be calibrated daily using a calibration syringe to ensure measurement accuracy. During the test, the patient sits upright with their back straight, applies a nose clip, and uses a disposable cardboard mouthpiece connected to the spirometer. After a few normal breaths, the patient performs a deep inhalation followed by a forced and prolonged exhalation lasting at least three seconds. The test is repeated to ensure result validity. Correct spirometry performance requires specific spirometer consumables that guarantee hygiene, safety, and test quality. The main spirometry consumables include disposable cardboard mouthpieces, antibacterial and antiviral filters, and nose clips.
